About the Breed
With their shimmering golden coats, expressive eyes, and tails that seem in perpetual motion, Golden Retrievers are the undisputed ambassadors of canine joy. But look beneath that iconic beauty and you’ll find a breed that embodies a perfect harmony of intelligence, athletic prowess, and an unparalleled capacity for devotion.
Originating in the Scottish Highlands in the late 19th century, Golden Retrievers were meticulously bred by Lord Tweedmouth to be the ultimate gun dog: capable of navigating rugged terrain and icy waters to retrieve waterfowl with a legendary "soft mouth." Today, that same intelligence, trainability, and eagerness to please have made them one of the world's most versatile and beloved breeds.
They are perhaps most famous for their exceptional temperament. Gentle, tolerant, and profoundly friendly, Goldens are natural family companions, forming deep, unwavering bonds with their humans and remaining remarkably patient, especially with children. Their natural optimism extends to everyone they meet, making them poor guard dogs but perfect candidates for therapy work, where their calming presence brings comfort to those in need.
This gentle nature, however, is balanced by a playful and energetic spirit. Goldens are powerful athletes, excelling in almost every canine sport imaginable—from obedience and agility to tracking and dock diving. Their tireless enthusiasm for life is nowhere more evident than in their favorite pastime: a never-ending game of fetch. Whether it’s retrieving a tennis ball in the backyard or a decoy in the field, their passion for the "hunt" remains a defining characteristic.
Yet, perhaps their most remarkable trait is their versatility in service. Their sharp minds and intuitive nature make them brilliant assistance dogs, guiding the visually impaired, alerting the hearing impaired, and providing mobility assistance. They are also tireless heroes in search and rescue operations, using their keen sense of smell to find the missing, and dedicated partners in law enforcement.
Owning a Golden Retriever means embracing a life filled with laughter, activity, and an abundance of affection. They are dogs that don't just live in your house; they become an integral part of your family's story. If you're seeking a loyal companion, a playful partner, and a friend who will greet you with unbridled joy every single day, the Golden Retriever is, quite simply, as good as it gets.
When you are bringing home a puppy from us, you effectively become our partner in caring for these little puppies for life. It’s part of the reason that we require you to take out pet health insurance and strongly encourage all new owners to take their pup to the vet as soon as possible. No matter how smoothly the transition goes, having your puppy checked by a vet right away is both the healthy and responsible thing to do.
To keep a Golden Retriever happy and healthy, substantial daily exercise is a cornerstone of their care. Originally bred as energetic gun dogs in the Scottish Highlands, they possess high stamina and require robust physical and mental stimulation to thrive.
Since they have a powerful, natural instinct to fetch and a love for water, Golden Retrievers excel at long games of fetch, swimming, and hiking. With their high intelligence and eager-to-please attitude, they are superstars in a variety of canine sports, including advanced obedience, agility, and dock diving. True to the breed's original purpose, they have an innate drive to retrieve, making them top contenders in field trials and tracking events.
o ensure the healthy development of Golden Retriever puppies, precise nutrition is critical, specifically to manage their rapid growth and safeguard their skeletal health. As a large breed, they must be fed a high-quality large-breed puppy formula that maintains a balanced ratio of calcium and phosphorus; this prevents them from growing too quickly, which can cause serious joint issues like hip dysplasia later in life. Their diet should prioritize high-quality animal protein as the first ingredient to build lean muscle, along with essential fatty acids like DHA (found in fish oil) to support crucial brain and eye development. Feeding schedules change rapidly during the first year: puppies need 3 to 4 small, measured meals daily for the first few months, typically transitioning to 3 meals by six months, and finally to 2 meals by their first birthday to maintain stable energy and prevent bloat. Proper portion control is essential, as obesity in growing large-breed puppies can lead to long-term health complications.
Golden Retrievers are perhaps best recognized for their exceptionally friendly, tolerant, and eager-to-please nature, making them one of the world's most popular family dogs. Originally developed as highly capable gun dogs in Scotland for retrieving waterfowl (a role where they still excel), their soft mouths and remarkable intelligence translated perfectly to a wide range of human companionships. Today, they are renowned for their intelligence and versatility, excelling not only as brilliant assistance dogs for the blind and mobility-impaired but also as tireless search and rescue specialists and comforting therapy animals. This remarkable capability is matched by their physical athleticism and stamina, famously showcased in sports like obedience, agility, and dock diving, fueled by an almost tireless playfulness and love of fetch. Physically, their namesake is their beautiful, dense, water-repellent golden coat, complemented by a famously "soft" expression and a tail that seems to be in a constant, happy state of motion. Above all, Golden Retrievers are celebrated for their unwavering loyalty and affection, forming deep, devoted bonds with their human families and remaining remarkably gentle, especially with children.
The Golden Retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 1860s by Dudley Marjoribanks, Lord Tweedmouth, who crossed a yellow Flat-Coated Retriever with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel. The goal was a skilled hunting dog capable of retrieving game from both land and water in the rugged Scottish terrain. The breed was refined over decades with the addition of Irish Setter, Bloodhound, and more Tweed Spaniel bloodlines. Goldens were first recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925 and quickly rose to become one of the most beloved breeds in the United States, ranking consistently in the top 3 most popular breeds year after year.
We bought a white boxer puppy about a month ago now and he is great! Very smart loving and playful. When I called jane she was so kind over the phone I went and picked up Tyson that night. Her home is clean and the puppies looked well cared for. She gave me all the paperwork for the puppy as well as a little food. Tysons getting bigger and bigger every week and he LOVES to play. I have even had a few questions for Patty after we bought our puppy and she responded to my emails with in a day- actually within a few hours! Would definately recommend. Would even take the other fawn 4mo old boxer that I believe is Tysons litter mate if we had the room 🙁 Anyways, long story short, jane is a caring person and has great puppies :)”n in the future if I decide to expand my family. Thanks Patty for making this an enjoyable adoption
We purchased Wrigley about a month ago and she is the PERFECT addition to our family! She has a GREAT personality, is GREAT with adults, children and other dogs. I would highly recommend jane as a good person to purchase your pet from. She will be there to answer any questions and made our internet experience a positive one. We are very happy with our new puppy and hope jane will continue to sell puppies and bring the same joy to others as she has to our family. Thank you! The Heffrons Dallas, TX
We brought home a little female morkie (Zoe) last week. She is the sweetest, healthiest, smartest little puppy!!The 4 hour drive was well worth it. Zoe is wonderful! Our Vet was impressed at how healthy she was. jane’s place was very clean and the puppies are well taken care of. If you are looking for a healthy, well taken care of puppy.. you should go to jane’s
We purchased a teddy bear from you on Mother’s Day and he is everything we were looking for. He cried the first night and that was it. He doesnt even wake up to go out overnight and doesnt potty in his crate. Going potty outside and on the paper without many accidents at all. A very lovable puppy. We will definitely recommend you to anyone we know that is looking for a puppy.
